General versus specific tapping
You can tap on general issues, such as stress, anxiety, overwhelm when you experience them. You will calm down your nervous system in the moment and feel better. This is great!! But … the feeling might return, next time you face a similar situation. You can tap again, and again and over time your nervous system will learn a different response, which does work but could be a lengthy process.
There is more you can do. In Clinical EFT, your practitioner helps you to work on the emotional and psychological stress of specific memories and events that lay at the root of your current responses. Doing so alongside sending the physiological calming tapping signals to the body, something profound happens: not only do you then feel calmer in the moment, your brain starts to actually ‘update’ old emotional patterns.

When you experienced something that upset you, you feel these emotions every time you think about it, such as when a something in a current situation provides a trigger to this memory. This is something that you aren’t always conscious of. But when you actively remember the original event and tap at the same time, you are telling your nervous system: “Hey, it’s okay. That was in the past. There is no need to get upset now”, and the brain ‘re-saves’ the memory, but with less emotional intensity attached to it. And often with a new perspective on the current situation as well. This is the rewiring process!
