I tried it: being less sensitive, toughening up, dismissing my own needs … It didn’t work out well. I became chronically stressed, overwhelmed, was filled with self doubt and anxiety, I was in survival mode all the time….

Challenges

Being a Highly Sensitive Woman comes with specific gifts and challenges. Unfortunately the challenges often can be so overwhelming that it becomes hard for you to recognise your gifts!

Chronic Conditions

Being highly sensitive can exacerbate your experience of pain, physically and emotionally. Other discomforts in your body that may come with your chronic conditions can also have a bigger impact on you, due to your sensitivity.

Vice versa, your sensitivity causes you to be more prone to certain chronic conditions, including fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and autoimmune disorders. You are also more prone to mental health conditions, including PTSD, depression and anxiety.

Good news for Highly Sensitive Women

Let me give you some good news! First of all, there is nothing wrong with you! High Sensitivity is a trait, not a disorder, and roughly 15-20% of the population is Highly Sensitive.

As a Highly Sensitive Person you have more intense experiences and as a consequence you suffer more in a negative environment then low-sensitive people do. You may be very familiar with this experience. It is probably why you are reading this!

And here is the even better news: in a positive environment you are able to thrive more then low-sensitive people do!

Yes! Let that sink in for a moment….

But how? Where do I find a positive environment? … I can hear you thinking…

I understand that question. Living in a society that is dominated by low sensitives creates real challenges for you.

These things are overpowering. They make it really difficult to see the positives, to recognise your gifts, right? And even if you are aware of them, these challenges might leave you terrified to express them.

On top of that, within the population of Highly Sensitive Persons, you are a woman. And women face specific challenges as well.

Do you feel for instance that something has to be perfect before you are willing to put it out in the world, that you need to have it all under control and figured out? And when something you do fails, do you feel ashamed and think that you are just not good enough? These things generally are experienced this way much more in women then in men. Consequently, women are much less aware of their true potentials!

Unfortunately these challenges of being a women and being a Highly Sensitive Person amplify each other. So as a Highly Sensitive Woman, you experience the challenges that women face at an even deeper level then low sensitive women.
